Marshal Blank (Master's student) presented their research at the Annual Meeting of the Missouri Valley Branch and the Missouri Branch of the American Society of Microbiology in Springfield, MO March 17-18, 2017. Marshal took second place in his session for his short talk!

"CRISPR -- Bacterial Defense to Genomic Editing." Dr. Paul Schweiger will discuss the CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technique and how it has been used to fight diseases and enhance agriculture, as well as the ethical issues of this new technique. call 882-0714. 7 p.m. in the Springfield-Greene County Library Center auditorium for adults. Marshal took second place in his session for his short talk!

Dr. Schweiger gave a CNAS public lecture on November 10 at 7:30 PM in Temple Hall 002 about the history, applications, and controversy of using bacterial CRISPR systems to edit and modify genomes. A preview can be found here. Thanks to all who attended and for a pleasant and lively discussion.

Dr. Schweiger appeared on KSMU Ozark Public Radio STEM Spots on October 29th, 2015 where he discussed "Yeast: You Can Do More Than Bake It", which concerned the ability to manipulate the cellular metabolisms to use as biofactories the topic. Some topics discussed were the use of yeast for the produciton of opiates, insulin, and treatments for malaria. A link to the post-interview webcast can be found here.
